Back Stiffness on a Long Drive?

Back Stiffness

Anticipating back stiffness when you get out of the car after your road trip? Whether it’s cruising down to Margaret River or heading up north to Coral Bay, long hours behind the wheel can turn an exciting trip into a back stiffness ordeal.

What Happens to Your Back During Long Drives?

Your spine prefers movement. When you sit for hours on end, several things happen:

  • Increased pressure on the lower back – The natural curve of your lumbar spine flattens, leading to disc compression and discomfort.
  • Reduced blood circulation – Less movement means less blood flow to the muscles, leading to stiffness and fatigue.
  • Postural fatigue – As your muscles tire from holding the same position, you may start slouching, placing extra strain on your spine.

Add in poor posture, road vibrations, and limited movement, and it’s no surprise that many people get out of the car sore and have back stiffness.

How to Prevent and Manage Back Pain on Long Drives

The good news is that a few simple strategies can help you stay comfortable and pain-free while driving long distances:

  1. Adjust Your Seat and Posture
    • Ensure your seat is positioned so that your knees are at hip level or slightly higher.
    • Keep your back supported with a lumbar roll or a small cushion.
    • Maintain a relaxed grip on the steering wheel and avoid slouching forward.
  2. Take Regular Breaks
    • Aim to stop every 2 hours for at least 5-10 minutes.
    • Stretch, walk around, and do some gentle spinal mobility exercises.
    • If possible, switch drivers to give your body a break.
  3. Back movements
    • Shift your weight slightly from side to side
    • roll the pelvis back and forwards.
    • A heat pack on your lower back during the drive can help ease tightness.

Before your next road trip, take a few minutes to plan for back-friendly driving. Adjust your seat, pack a lumbar cushion, schedule rest stops, and incorporate simple movements into your trip.
